Diagonal Pieced Backing Hack

If you're making a quilt that is juuuuust wide enough to require a pieced backing, here is a cool technique you can use to save on backing fabric.

Use this table to estimate how many yards of backing fabric you need, or feel free to email me for a more exact estimate.

Directions

  1. 1. Open your fabric at the crease and lay it flat. I recommend pressing the crease open.
  2. 2. Fold the fabric diagonally across its entire length, and cut along the fold line to make two huge triangles.
  3. 3. Lay the triangles out in their original positions, then slide them next to each other along the cut diagonal until they form a rectangle or square large enough for your backing.
  1. 4. Flip the right piece across the left piece along the diagonal so that they are right sides together, and pin in place.
  2. 5. Sew the two pieces together, then open and press.

6. Trim off the top and bottom overhangs.

Congratulations - your diagonally-pieced backing is now finished, and you saved some fabric! Yay!
